THANK YOU
We want to thank you, the people of Hawaii, from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity of time, effort, participation and financial contributions. Your contributions have greatly assisted the hard work we have done the past nine months and have contributed to the success of our cause. Mahalo!
WHO ARE THE PEOPLE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF KAUA'I (PPK)?
| We are a group of concerned citizens that was formed after the Hawaii Superferry (HSF) held meetings on Kauai in June 2006. HSF presented information on what had already been done and what they were going to do, without considering the concerns of Hawaii residents and without an Environmental Impact Study (EIS). Rich Hoeppner spoke at the meeting and, in frustration, said he was starting a petition to require an EIS before the ferry docked on Kauai. Many people came forward after the meeting wanting to sign the petition. Rich replied he didn't have a petition yet, he'd only just thought of it! |

Many of those people became the founders of PPK. We immediately started a petition drive, gathering of over 6,000 signatures requesting an EIS before the HSF is allowed to dock at Nawiliwili. During the summer we connected with others on Maui and the Big Island to share ideas and information. We attempted to meet with Governor Lingle, who would not schedule a meeting with us. In September 2006, we planned a People's Meeting on the Superferry in Honolulu, with a panel of neighbor island presenters who outlined our concerns about the Hawaii Superferry commencing operation without an EIS. We invited the Governor, but again she was too busy to join us. When six of us visited her office with the petitions, neither the Governor nor any of her senior staffers had a few minutes available even to accept the petitions. We are, however, very pleased to report that we were able to submit the petition to Kalani English, Chair of the Senate Transportation and International Affairs Committee, and Ron Menor, Chair of the Senate Energy and Environment Committee, when their committees heard testimony on Senate Bill 1276 (Superferry EIS bill) on in Kaua'i on Saturday February 10th, 2007.
At present we are working with colleagues in Maui and Big Island to support the passage of the Environmental Impact Statement bills that are now before the State Legislature and that would require an EIS for the Hawaii Superferry before the ferry begins operations. In addition, upon passage, the bill would immediately stop all work designed to accommodate the ferry at the harbors on all islands pending the completion of the EIS.
